Sé el Cambio: Youth Immersion Trip to Honduras

Wake to the "Qui quiri qui!!" of neighborhood roosters and the smell of frijoles fritos, huevitos, and fresh hand-made tortillas. It isn't hard to step into the rich fabric of Honduran culture while at the same time learning or strengthening your Spanish. Loving families with a little extra space (and I mean little) invite you to join the mesh as they introduce you to what it is like to live in Honduras. This third-world country is rich in family tradition, in music and food, in service and in pride.

For four-weeks, youth are invited to become part of a family who will love, teach, feed, and care for them, while providing real, everyday experiences in Honduran life. This includes the art of hand-washing clothes, making tortillas and other typical treasures, white-washing the home or adobe fire stove, interacting in a tight community, and loving and serving each other. Some youth may enjoy adding to their experience by accompanying the local missionaries in visits, leading weekly community story-times, taking mini-excursions to neighboring pueblitos, and attending the local schools with the family members. Later trips may include stays near the beautiful Yojoa Lake, the original capital city of Comayagua, or the cloud forests of La Tigra.

The exchange coordinator lives ten minutes from the pueblo and will have daily tutoring sessions for language study with each youth. Additionally, youth will have the opportunity to immerse further by studying Honduran classic authors and artists under the mentorship of the coordinator. The trip will include two excursions: a day in the quaint, typical town of Santa Lucia where works of the famous Honduran artist Velasquez are displayed; a second excursion of three days to a mountain homesteader family, which has occupied the same land and home for generations just outside of the cobblestone and adobe pueblo of San Antonio de Oriente. We may also spend a day exploring museums and 17th century colonial architecture in the capital city.

Cost for one month is $1500. Youth will arrange personal flights and need to pay for personal items or additional food, medications or medical care, and additional external excursions. All other accommodations, cell phone, travel, study material, food, and community arrangements will be provided by exchange coordinator. Youth may consider additional excursions to the Copán ruins, the northern coast reefs and islands, and beaches or botanical gardens. These are farther away, but offer a wonderful opportunity to explore this beautiful country. Families desiring to pick up their youth personally are welcome to guidance on accompanying their youth on these additional adventures by the coordinator.

Dear family and youth considering "Sé el Cambio" foreign trips,

I am so excited to welcome you to my neck of the world. This place is beautiful and the people have huge hearts. I am so lucky to be here! Once here, I will care for you like my own child and give you the opportunity to stay with some of my best friends, who have become my own family here. Each of these families has youth at home, who are loving and friendly to no end. One has all sons, another has all girls, another has a nice mix! They all live in humble circumstances that provide a great place to have complete immersion in the language as well as the best of Honduran culture. While you are here, you can go to school with the youth from these homes and/or receive my tutorship, with a focus on Latin American, and particularly Honduran, classics and language. I´ll be sure to give you language help each day (and homework) so you can really leap forward in your Spanish. I especially hope you will take part in opportunities to give to the community. You can go out with missionaries and share with them. You can host weekly story time in the community, with my help. (Most families don´t have a single child´s book in their home.) You may like to spend a day or two helping the local Peace Corps or orphanage volunteers. There is so much to learn and to share.
