In 2007, the state of Utah passed the Cottage Food Production Act, which provided for certain foods to be produced in residential kitchens and sold to the general public. This law provides a unique opportunity for homeschool families to engage in home-based businesses involving the production of food. There is a substantial amount of work required to comply with the statute. This presentation will detail the Allens' experience in becoming a certified cottage kitchen and working with the different agencies needed to have a home-based business that is compliant with state and local legislation. The presentation will also highlight some of the specific educational benefits the Allen kids have realized by running the business from raw materials acquisition through production and distribution as well as by interacting with various agencies to stay current on legal requirements. There will be time for questions and answers.
