TJEd Forum Keynote

SLC TJEd Forum 2010

This year's Forum brings together over fifty of the most effective leaders and mentors in the field of Leadership Education for a full day of learning and inspiration. Transform your home, community or school as you learn to successfully implement Thomas Jefferson Education. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned veteran, the Forum has something for everyone!

Special Events include the TJEd Marketplace Leadership Summit, the TJEd Marketplace Scholarship Banquet, an Arbinger Institute parenting seminar, the IEW High School Essay Intensive and a Family Ball.

The Forum itself has an adult session, with presentations focusing on topics such as teaching, inspiring, and “you, not them”, and youth sessions for ages 12 and 13, ages 14 and 15, and ages 16 through 18, each covering issues appropriate to its audience, so make sure to bring your scholar-aged youth with you. The TJEd Marketplace Exposition will also be taking place throughout the day, with the bookstore and over 30 booths featuring organizations and businesses to support leadership education in your family.

Make your reservations now, while rooms are still available!

  • Dr. Andrew Groft
    Keynote (8AM-10AM)

The rebirth of art, science and learning between the middle ages and modernity proved a powerful catalyst that empowered the masses and revitalized democracy.  Yet people still wanted a king to either adore or blame.  And they got what they wanted.  The 16th, 17th and 18th Centuries gave the world a greater number of powerful monarchs than any previously recorded in Western Civilization.

It has only been in the last 200 years that democracy on a grand scale has been seriously considered.  But like monarchies, democracies are inherently flawed.  The American

  • Julie Earley
    Session 1 (10:15AM-11:15AM)
    Session 3 (2:00PM-3:00PM)

While we often speak of the Cold War ending with the fall of the Berlin Wall, centralized collectivism rebrands itself in a new totalitarian package of eager "helping hands" at least once a century. For an unwitting public, the reduction of liberty is happily accepted which prompts many of us to stand fast to preserve it. Unfortunately we oftentimes sabotage our own efforts with the best of intentions. How can we more effectively preserve our diminishing liberty?

  • Carl Woolston
    Stephen Palmer
    Session 1 (10:15AM-11:15AM)
    Session 4 (3:15PM-4:15PM)

Does the “real world” reward a liberal arts education? Can studying the classics actually increase your cash flow? Do profits flow from curiosity and a love of learning?

  • Mary Ann Johnson
    Session 1 (10:15AM-11:15AM)

Super charge your children’s learning environment and decrease your “what are we going to do today” stress!

  • Marlene Peterson
    Session 1 (10:15AM-11:15AM)
    Session 2 (11:30AM-12:30PM)

“The destiny of the world is determined less by the battles that are lost and won than by the stories it loves and believes in.”

  • Lara Gallagher
    Session 1 (10:15AM-11:15AM)
    Session 5 (4:30PM-5:30PM)

“It’s my job to cook, feed, wash, iron, mend, chauffeur, bathe, scrub, clothe, disinfect, organize, and think for my children.” Think again! Everyone wants to feel successful and needed, including your children. Learning to take care of themselves and others when they are young is the best way for them to build confidence and character. If you are doing everything for your children, when are they ever going to learn to take care of themselves and who is going to teach them? Now is the time for you to graduate from Cleaning Lady to Mother, Father, Teacher.

  • Shauna Bird Dunn
    Session 1 (10:15AM-11:15AM)

    We shouldn't teach great books;
we should teach a love of reading.
    ~ B. F. Skinner

  • Leslie Householder
    Session 1 (10:15AM-11:15AM)
    Session 4 (3:15PM-4:15PM)

After seven long years of hardship, and after feeling so much stress that Leslie Householder actually called the police on a kid who broke her broom, she and her husband were shown a diagram - a visual aid that changed everything.  After seeing the visual aid, and finally understanding the concept it so elegantly explains, they were able to apply principles of personal leadership to triple their income in three months.  Thousands of people all over the world have seen similarly remarkable results by applying the principle explained in this one simple drawing.  For families wh

    Session 1 (10:15AM-11:15AM)
    Session 3 (2:00PM-3:00PM)

True communication is knowing who you are, and how to fully express your mission. Your mission is inseparably connected to leadership.  Communication is foundational to leadership.  Learn how to unify your mission with the power of communication.  Discover the “Grand Keys of Great Communication” that will enable you to have transformational influence in your mission.

  • Diann Jeppson
    Jodie Palmer
    Session 1 (10:15AM-11:15AM)

Forgetting oneself in the work of building community is one of life’s sweetest joys, but it is not without its pitfalls. Local communities, whether based on geography, lifestyle or a common philosophy can be an invaluable resource for building families and individuals. Although we typically identify statesmanship as a key element of national and international affairs, the impact of statesmanship within local communities, whether as an effective leader or member, is huge.

  • Kelli Poll
    Session 1 (10:15AM-11:15AM)
    Session 2 (11:30AM-12:30PM)

Classic stories are lessons in leadership. From Fairy Tales and Myths to Shakespeare and Tolkein, classic literature has something to say to us about the journey of life, the journey of our life - our hero quest. This is how to study literature in a way that increases epiphanies by understanding how the great stories are related to each other and to our own stories.

  • Heather Burton
    Session 1 (10:15AM-11:15AM)
    Session 5 (4:30PM-5:30PM)

Sometimes our "best-laid plans," wishes, hopes and dreams for our families and ourselves appear to "go wrong." What are some of the lessons we can learn from classic resources about helping things go right? As a framework for our discussion, we will consider the Parenting Pyramid developed by the Arbinger Institute and how its lessons can fortify TJEd-practising family and provide clarity wherever relationships appear to be "going wrong."

  • Jon McKenzie
    Session 2 (11:30AM-12:30PM)
    Session 5 (4:30PM-5:30PM)

Youth is an excellent time to be an entrepreneur - energy levels and willingness to try new things are high, while risks are limited.  Don’t miss the opportunity to develop and encourage your youth.  This workshop will discuss 5 lessons I have learned in developing and encouraging my children to be entrepreneurs.  Numerous examples of successful and non-successful experiences will be discussed and you will leave with a place t

  • Session 2 (11:30AM-12:30PM)

This one hour discussion will teach you everything you need to know to launch and grow a business from incorporation to networking to exit strategies.  The discussion will talk about how to get money, how to use the internet, how to avoid common mistakes and how to cash in.

  • Keri Tibbets
    Session 2 (11:30AM-12:30PM)
    Session 4 (3:15PM-4:15PM)

Come take a journey through Core Phase and into Love of Learning. Learn how to give order, direction and rhyme & reason to Core Phase.  Children learn from work and play, but what gauges can we as parents and mentors set to help us determine, after a day of work and play, if it was a success?  Was it progression?  Did it lead them on toward Love of Learning?  Come find out how to let “Inspire not Require” really work, and how to apply it in your daily life.  Have you been inspiring, yet haven’t seen the fruits of your labors, and in desperation have begun requiring?  Join us as we discuss the different kinds of play that lead to Love of Learning vs. activities that invite children to remain in perpetual childhood. Come discover how to set up a rich home environment where your children will actually fall into Love of Learning on their own…naturally…boys included!

  • Teri Helms
    Session 2 (11:30AM-12:30PM)
    Session 5 (4:30PM-5:30PM)

Teri uses analogies from the life of Olympic swimming legend, Michael Phelps, along with a visual presentation and movie clips to illustrate the point that Leadership Education is not only a way of life; but an option for educating that has no parallel.

  • Shauna Bird Dunn
    Session 2 (11:30AM-12:30PM)

Yes! It does take a super hero. It takes Wonder Woman!

  • Andrew Pudewa
    Session 2 (11:30AM-12:30PM)

Children like to do what they can do; they want to do what they think they can do, and they hate to do what they think they cannot do.  If you want excited and enthusiastic children who learn well, you must understand these key laws of motivation, and focus on the essential requirement of relevancy. If it matters, children will learn it, and if it doesn’t, they won’t.  This session will enlighten you with specific ways to find and create relevancy for children, even when they have no apparent interest.

  • Daniela Larsen
    Session 2 (11:30AM-12:30PM)

The Hero Generation will surely face many challenges.  With those challenges will come failures, dark times and the temptation to quit.  Join us for a discussion on how to build  character traits such as determination, initiative, empathy and courage in our children and in our selves.  Learn the things you can begin  doing in your home tomorrow that will inspire optimism through challenges and valor in times of crisis.

We can show you how.  Do you look at society around you and sometimes feel that there is something missing?  Come learn three key ways of looking at the world and change your society:

  • Andrew Pudewa
    Session 3 (2:00PM-3:00PM)
    Session 4 (3:15PM-4:15PM)

Many parents think that good readers will naturally become good writers.  Others think that writing talent is just that—a natural ability—some have it; others don't. Both are myths. History and modern research show very clearly how good writers have developed. What are the two most critical things you can do as a parent to develop a high level of aptitude, from a young age and into high school? With humor and insight, Andrew will share the two easy but unbelievably powerful things you can do to build language patterns and nurture competent communicators in your family.

  • Scott Bradley
    Session 3 (2:00PM-3:00PM)

The Founding Fathers of the United States were unequivocally committed to the necessity of an educated populace in order to preserve liberty throughout the nation. However, the education process must confirm in the hearts and minds of the people of the nation the sound, firm principles upon which liberty and proper government are based.

  • Nicholeen Peck

  • Jason Gardner
    Session 4 (3:15PM-4:15PM)

You are the outlier, the one that stands out as markedly different from the rest of the group. You are pursuing a world class education, but the world is not going to hand you greatness just because you’re smart. Find out what all great people have in common and what it takes to be the best at anything. What do Mozart, professional hockey players, J. Robert Oppenheimer, and Steve Jobs all have in common? 10,000.

  • David Grant
    Session 4 (3:15PM-4:15PM)

Logic is as fundamental to argument, persuasion and language as mathematics is to physics, accounting and engineering.  Yet, logic is one of the most neglected of all disciplines.  Children and adolescents who learn logic read better, write better, test better and think better after studying logic than before.  Logic is essential to persuasion and credibility.  This presentation will discuss logic education and give

  • Spencer and Nicholeen Peck
    Session 5 (4:30PM-5:30PM)

When we speak to people around the country about the style of parenting we live in our home and the family culture we are passionate about, one of the biggest responses we get is, “I think I need self-government myself before I can teach it to my children.”  This is so true!  You, not them remember?  It is hard to stay calm when you are under pressure and dealing with the stresses of raising children and living in

History cycles through generations and those who don’t know the patterns are condemned to repeat them. In the coming crisis of our day, will you become the heroes who lead out or the followers who shrink back and become absorbed into the collective?

    Keynote (8AM-10AM)

We all know that for years you have been told that you are awesome and incredible. Well here’s the truth . . .

  • Andrew Pudewa
    Session 1 (10:15AM-11:15AM)

For those who enjoy writing or for those who don’t, this concrete method of teaching and learning stylistic variety will seem almost like magic.  Useful at the elementary level and equally useful for the university student, this approach to sentence pattern mastery is powerful!  Likely you’ll ask, “Why didn’t I learn this when I was in school?”  The words “writing style” will take on a whole new dimension.

  • Nicholeen Peck
    Session 2 (11:30AM-12:30PM)

Many of us want to start making a difference in the world right now.  Is this possible when you are still a youth?  Absolutely!  The world is waiting for you to do the –ing.  This –ing thing is the key to transforming the world; no matter how old you are.  Warning, this class will be a bit wild at times.  You may not be able to stay in your seat during some of the excitement.  Come explore the power of –ing!

  • Dan Ralphs
    Session 3 (2:00PM-3:00PM)

One definition of leadership is that the leader is simply the best in any field.  To be the best, we must be willing to submit ourselves to living a lifestyle of greatness.  If we really want greatness, lets PROVE IT!

  • Ann Meeks
    Session 4 (3:15PM-4:15PM)

ACT test, college admissions, scholarships, academic and leadership camps, and Prom,  versus classics, scholar phase, mission, simulations and Formal Ball.  It seems as if a line has been drawn in the sand.  Choose one side or the other.  If you go to Prom you’re labeled a “teenager” or if you choose not to get a high school diploma you are not college bound and have no future.  Right?  Wrong.   A true leader creates his or her own success and doesn’t follow any type of conveyor belt thinking.

Several Forum speakers are Mentors from GWU. Representatives from GWU will also be present at the TJEd MarketPlace Exposition.

AYLI has decided to focus on what they do best – clubs and events for children and youth. To learn more, visit www.ayli.org. TJEd MarketPlace was created with the sole purpose of being a resource and connection service for Leadership Education oriented organizations, businesses, mentors and events, including the Salt Lake Forum.

Some Forums are produced by TJEd Marketplace and some are produced by separate entities.

Online registrations must be received by February 16, 2010. Mail-in registrations must be postmarked by February 16, 2010 to qualify for the early registration discount.

Because of our room limitations, we would like to encourage youth to register in their respective age ranges, regardless of their TJEd experience. Issues facing a 16-year-old are different than those of a 12-year-old. The workshops for youth have been carefully designed for youth in specific age ranges. Please make your decisions thoughtfully.

No. Youth will be given a colored nametag and should attend the workshops associated with their registered group. The size of the rooms will only allow for a certain number of participants.

Babes-in-arms are welcome and accommodations will be provided for nursing and diaper changing in the lounge areas of the women’s restrooms. Please be courteous and do not block the aisles with strollers. It would not be appropriate to bring other children to the Forum. However, children of all ages are welcome at the Family Ball.

Parents may bring children of all ages to the ball. Our intent is to have this be a whole family event. The family ticket is intended for immediate family members only.

Parents and children living at home. Please have grandparents and married children purchase their own tickets.

Formal, semi-formal and best dress are all appropriate. It is our objective that everyone enjoy the ball in the dance clothing that works for them.

The TJEd MarketPlace Exposition features displays and information booths of organizations and businesses dedicated to Leadership Education and to moving the cause of liberty. The Exposition will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
