The Great Depression
"If America is moving into a long-term recession then it is time to start preparing for it in the Leadership Way. The greatest classics of depression and rebuilding periods contain the best, most effective, practical lessons for success in difficult times. Yet these aren't found in any self-help books or articles from the doomsayers or the optimists. I haven't seen these vitally important concepts taught anywhere else. They are missed even by most of those who have read these books! But these forgotten and hidden keys are incredibly helpful. If you are going to ‘live’ during the next seven years of crisis, these keys will make all the difference in your happiness and success.” -Oliver DeMille |
Dr. Oliver DeMille Oliver DeMille is the founder and former president of George Wythe College, and the author of A Thomas Jefferson Education. Presently, he serves as Chancellor of the University and directs its graduate and doctoral programs. Oliver is a popular keynote speaker, writer and business consultant, and he is married to the former Rachel Pinegar. They have eight children.

"A Crisis is a Terrible
This quote, originally made by the Stanford Economics Professor Paul Romer in 2004 has become a catch phrase in both business and government as our economic and political challenges have deepened. It is pertinent to us as well. The next 20-30 years offer some of the greatest opportunities in history. Historical cycles, not only of hundred year turnings, but also of broad trends often lasting 1000 years or more demonstrate that we are at a watershed point in history. The events and decisions of the upcoming years are likely to impact not only the lives our children and grandchildren, but scores of generations to come. Are you spiritually, physically and intellectually prepared to take advantage of this opportunity? A leadership education built on a moral foundation is vital if we (and our children) are to succeed in the current crisis. Not only can we rise to the occasion and positively impact the world, we must. |
Dr. Shane S. Schulthies Shane S. Schulthies received his PhD in Exercise Science from Brigham Young University where he subsequently taught for 13 years. He also has degrees in Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine. He is widely published and has lectured extensively in the United States, Europe and Asia. He has a broad background in academics, consulting, business, and government. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Constitutional Law. He is married to the former Kimberly Hanson. They have 10 children. |

Workshop # 1
Do you worry about the progress your children don’t seem to be making? Are you feeling stressed juggling so many competing demands? Are you afraid you’re not doing IT right? Then you need what Oliver DeMille identified as the 8th Key of Great Teaching: Secure not Stressed. In part this key is defined as being happy, relaxed, and trusting the process. It means being secure in who we are and what we are doing even though who we are and what we do may be different than the mainstream. Applying the 8th Key impacts our ability to implement all the other keys and make the principles of TJ Ed really work in our homes. Working the 8th Key eliminates the stress, worry, and overwhelm and in their place brings peace and security. Don’t we all need this from time to time? Come! Discover the power of the 8th Key of Great Teaching: Secure not Stressed. The Power of Simplicity
“To render less complex; to make plain and easy.” Doesn’t that sound refreshing especially for those times when it all feels too complicated? Whether you are new to TJ ED or have years of experience, coming back to this key of great teaching is empowering and liberating. The societal pull of our day is that more is better and busiest is best. If we are not vigilant complexity creeps into our lives almost imperceptibly. Working the principle of Simplicity draws us back, cuts through the confusing and meaningless complexities and grounds us in what is real, what lasts, and what REALLY works. Simplicity keeps our vision clear and is the answer to “How do you do it?” Simplicity works wonders in all areas of our lives especially these: great education, family culture, home management, and structuring time not content. The format for this workshop will include lecture, real-life experiences and examples, discussion, and question and answer. You will learn the tried and tested 3 Steps to Simplicity and other strategies for keeping complexity in check. Come, feel the power of Simplicity and see why it is the seed bed of greatness. Workshop # 3
The Role of Faith in Finding and Fulfilling Your Personal Mission
In his foreward to the book Left to Tell, Wayne Dyer writes: “A single phrase from the scriptures reminds us that ‘with God all things are possible.’ Now what does that leave out? The answer is obvious to all: All things means all things.” Faith is about seeing the possibilities. With an eye of faith we can see not just who we are now but who we can become. Faith allows us to see our children for who they really are and what they were born to do. With faith we see what now is and also what needs to be. With faith we believe in the possibilities of the impossible and work to make those possibilities reality. In this workshop you will come to know exceptional people like Greg Mortenson, Immaculee Ilibagiza, a boy named Aslam and his father, and others. Their inspiring stories teach us of the connection between faith and personal mission. From their experiences come 5 Key Principles that are sure to impact your ability to find and fulfill your personal mission and to help your children do the same. Join us for this workshop. It’s time to embrace the possibilities. Add this recording to your shopping cart ($4)
Workshop # 4 Quality not Conformity:
Could it be that we are confused about these two? No wonder if we are. We live in a world that all too often holds conformity up as quality. As one of the 7 Keys of Great Teaching, Quality not Conformity is essential to nurturing human excellence. The human spirit yearns for and thrives on quality. Quality liberates, enlivens and quickens. Conformity binds human potential. It breeds cynicism, confusion and even anxiety. We need to be clear about this key and how to apply it. The four purposes of this workshop/discussion are : 1- to clarify our understanding of what quality is and what it is not; 2- to take a deeper look and recognize areas in our lives, especially education, where we hold on to conformity; 3- to know if what we are getting is quality or conformity; and 4- to understand where quality comes from and how to foster it in ourselves, our homes, and the world we live in. Quality: it’s worth a deeper look. Add this recording to your shopping cart ($4)

The E’s and Ease of Helping Your Child Learn to Love Reading We shouldn't teach great books; The E’s of helping your child learn to love reading include Example, Exposure and Excitement. This workshop is full of ideas to help fuel your child’s love for literature and reading—whether that love is just a tiny spark or a blazing fire. Some of these ideas include: Library-palooza, Drop Everything and Read time, holiday literary traditions, tips for encouraging personal core classic study, Book Diva visits, and Book Club Parties. Some ideas are tried and true methods while others are unique and exciting, but all are designed to help children in each of the four phases to develop a love for books and reading. “There are many little ways to enlarge your child’s world. Love of books is the best of all.” |
Shauna Bird Dunn Shauna and her alter egos: The Book Fairy, The Book Diva, and The 'Book-aneer,' work hard to create ravenous readers out of children in and near their home in American Fork, Utah. Her husband Brent claims that she suffers from OTTD (Over The Top Disorder), a condition that prevents her from doing things "the boring way." A mother of five home schooled bookworms, Shauna earned a Bachelor of Science in Marketing and Economics from Eastern New Mexico University, a Juris Doctorate from the J. Reuben Clark Jr. School of Law, and a Master of Public Administration from the Brigham Young University Marriot School of Management. A nationally published author, she currently serves on the American Fork Library Board of Trustees.

Mission Phase:
A mission centered life seems exciting, adventurous and romantic in the early stages. Realistically it can be a life filled with extreme challenges, great sacrifice, and overwhelming odds. However, the reality of seeing it through results in life changing experiences that are beyond your wildest imagination. Leadership education presupposes a life centered on purpose and mission. What are some of the needs of the 21st Century? How can we be prepared to take them on, see them through and witness the miraculous in the process? What role does the phases of learning play in our ability to be successful? Are we prepared to dig deep and stay the course? I know we must, I know we can!!! |

A Renaissance of Social Leadership
In Lee Iacoca’s new book Where Have All the Leaders Gone?, he strikes a poignant cord—with all of these problems we are facing in our nation, where is the outrage? Why are we all just standing around waiting? And what are we waiting for? Where are the ordinary men and women who are the legacy of this great nation? The Sergeant York’s, the Mr. Smith’s, the Rosa Park’s, the Preston Tucker’s and the adherents of Cincinnatus? Where are the everyday leaders in society, who have the common horse sense to solve these problems?
With all of the resources in our modern society; family, media, community, business, church, local government and education, we should have at least a few really good solutions being discussed and promoted from every tavern, small business, restaurant, board room and dining room table.
Where do you stand? Are you part of the problem or part of the solution? If you are serious about lasting, positive societal change...
If you know that you are being prepared to do great good in your home town or city or state or even the nation...
If you see greatness in yourself and need a little more vision to actually implement that greatness...
You do not want to miss this workshop!

Stronger, Wiser, Deeper, Brighter, Sweeter, Finer, Gentler, Kinder:
This session is for two special kinds of people: those who love great books, and those who are trying to love great books. Please consider coming and bringing along with you your personal stories about the power of books to help us be more of what we hope (and need!) to be. We won’t even scratch the surface…but we will almost for certain come away grateful and hopeful and inspired to make great ideas and books beloved guests in our homes. |
Heather Burton
Heather Burton is avid. From that descriptor, you can pretty much imagine anything she likes to try and to do. Some of her favourite involvements include learning with her children (8 sons, one daughter), working and playing alongside her husband Allan, creating and bringing to reality events with her southern Alberta homeschooling community, delving deeper in both the practice and study of “Leadership Education,” serving in the women's organization of her church, teaching, reading, writing, talking about ideas, growing things, playing outdoors (like in the national park near her home), hanging out with her llamas, and thinking whole, uninterrupted thoughts. She is also an avid sleeper. Canadian by birth and residence, Heather is the President of LEAFF (www.leaffcanada.org) a Leadership Education service organization and is the Director of Arbinger Community, an on-line gathering of people around the world who are interested in peacebuilding. (www.arbinger.com / www.arbingercommunity.ning.com) Mostly, though, she’s a companion to Allan and a mom, and so glad to be both.

Find out why it is so essential for us to have Georgic leadership in today’s high-tech agricultural environment. Workshop # 1:
Mentoring is a delicate art used throughout a student’s education. Yet the way mentoring looks in Love of Learning is far different than in Scholar Phase. Learning these different ways of mentoring is difficult—especially when we haven’t had much experience with mentors ourselves. The classics are replete with examples of different styles of mentoring through the phases, but they are often unnoticed. In this presentation we’ll learn how to discern the surprising techniques used by hidden mentors in the classics. Add this recording to your shopping cart ($4) Workshop # 2:
While understanding the phases of learning helps you mentor your children from core phase through scholar phase, in order to achieve your own life’s mission you must go through the phases as well. Experiencing them alongside your children can provide both challenges and epiphanies. Instead of treating the phases like a “to-do list” to check off, we must learn what it takes to become a certain kind of parent. It’s not necessarily about what you do, instead it’s about who you are.

Simulations: What exactly is a simulation for love of learning phase kids? What are the parts and how do they go together? What exactly is debriefing and why is it so important? A large part of the population learns best through simulations and you can provide those experiences for your children and youth. Simulations that teach and are remembered can play a huge role in making your children's education much more effective by burning it into their neuron pathways. Come to this class to hear about and understand the plan, the process and the implementation. Warning: Anyone averse to having fun while homeschooling should not attend. Cyndi Hampton
Cyndi Hampton and her husband, Steve, reside in North Ogden where they enjoy raising their 7 delightful children, aged 7-20, whom she has lovingly and happily homeschooled for the past 16 years - with only a few minor lapses in the afore mentioned adjectives. She is a Co-founder of Polar Star Youth Education Association and has had the wonderful opportunity to work with many other homeschool families as they have built a educational community. She has a B.A. from the University of Utah, with a double major, Mathematics and English Literature. The greatest pleasure in her life has been to see her own children take off in their education - especially when it involves acting like a real leader, followed closely by seeing others' children and her own friends doing the same. She encourages her children to do funny things that aren't too dangerous and hopes they will make their mark on the world with minimal damage to others’ property. She is on the 30-year plan to get her master's degree from GWU and hopes that she can finish it before she dies. |

The Dangerous Dreamer
All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes, to make it possible. T.E. Lawrence
Add this recording to your shopping cart ($4)I believe that every person has a dream - a vision - something that they long to do or create or become. A lot of time has been spent on helping people discover that vision; but what do you do with it once you've got it? What is the next step? Ordinary people like you and I are figuring out the formulas that help take a vision from the dream world to physical reality. They are discovering the crippling effects of fear, the power of passion and the need for trust. They have practical advice in areas such as getting funding and making the right connections as well as more ambiguous things like having a positive attitude and finding the things that inspire you. It's time to learn from the trailblazers, the regular individuals who are just like you and me, who have gone down the path and are changing the world because they have not only discovered their vision, they are living it. It's time to learn from those who are doing so that we all can become dangerous dreamers! |

Rendering Greatness:
Parents can be inspiring, but how many of us were educated to speak the "inspire" language. This is what Elocution offers. Traditionally Elocution is the art of public speaking in which gesture, vocal production, and delivery are emphasized. It is in fact so much more; Elocution is the language of inspiration. Whether on the couch at home with your children or in the public arena, elocution can help you tell your story and change your audience.
Patrick Henry, Lincoln, Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr. and Reagan were powerful communicators because they mastered and applied the art of elocution. As influential as these men were, perhaps the greatest impact can be made in our own homes and communities. If we are to take our place as leaders in the 21st century we must begin to speak transformationally, impacting the people who matter the most. Add this recording to your shopping cart ($4) |

Is It Really Worth It?
“I’m tired.” “Is all this work really worth it?” “Does Leadership Education really matter that much?” “Am I messing up my kids for life?” “I need chocolate and a vacation.”
I’ve said these words many times as I have crossed through different phases of learning and life. Leadership education seemed safer when my children were younger but as they have grown older fear began to knock at the door and I found myself questioning if Leadership Education really mattered that much. It seemed like it was getting more difficult rather than easier. What I discovered was once I let go of fear and began to take control of my circumstances, my enthusiasm for learning, teaching and life has returned and multiplied. I quit making decisions based on what-ifs but rather sought inspiration for my own children and their individual gifts and talents. I quit comparing and started celebrating.
During our time together we will discuss: -- How to rest and renew so we can be an example to our children of healthy behavior (i.e. how to sit in a hot tub without melting your bowl of chocolate ice cream) -- Identifying patterns and rhythms in learning and life (i.e. knowing when to build a rocket simulator in your basement and when to simply take a shower) -- What homeschool looks like in the Meeks’ house on a day to day basis (i.e. organizing chaos in a pink fluffy bathrobe) -- Getting the big picture – how to develop a plan for core phase learners to excel in scholar phase (How Legos prepared my 16 year old son for UCLA Law Camp) -- …and anything else I feel inspired to say.
Let’s laugh together, learn together and change the world together. We can do it. |
Ann Meeks
Ann Meeks grew up among many teachers. Both her parents were at one time public educators as well as her grandmother and other family members. It seemed natural for her to follow suit. After graduating from Utah State University with degrees in English, Secondary Education, Journalism and Music she went on to teach high school literature and writing in Salt Lake City and Portland, Oregon. Never in her wildest dreams did she think she would become a homeschooling mom but she and her husband Jesse are in their sixth adventurous year. In the fall of 2006, she and her husband Jesse opened a Legacy Leadership Academy, private classical liberal arts high school. Currently she is working toward a Master’s Degree in education from George Wythe College. She also is a mentor teaching education classes in the George Wythe University extension program. By far her favorite and most challenging endeavor is to be an inspiring and loving teacher to four fabulous children, Andrew, 16, Daniel, 13, Jessica, 10 and Jacob, 8. |

Soft Boiled Teens vs. Hard Boiled Young Men and Young Women
Have you ever bitten into what you thought was going to be a hot hard boiled egg only to find it is cold and runny? Yikes! It was hardly worth eating. You feel disappointed, discouraged and if your like me, still hungry!
Add this recording to your shopping cart ($4)Now is the time to help our sons and daughters engage. Go ahead, throw them into the furnace of affliction. They deserve it; they are born to it. It would be sad to surmise that stress will kill teenagers. Perhaps it will, but not completely. They will rise like the Phoenix from the ashes. YM and YW rarely develop into great and impactful adults by accident. Fathers don’t need to delay greatness by diluting their youths minds with runny yokes – information and experience that is watered down, uncooked, and simmered in lukewarm water. Parents, the sum experience of your lives now affords you the opportunity – even gives you the right - to mentor your sons and daughters, not to become runny yokes, but firm hard boiled yokes of potential greatness. We will discuss why you are the biggest and often the only person in position to help your sons and daughters discover their genius. Why you are best suited to give them the opportunity to express their talents and greatness. It is your destiny to make this happen. We will also discuss practical ideas you can implement now and how to avoid potential hazards and pitfalls along the way. If you don't have youth in your home currently, someday you will. Begin to prepare now for what is ahead. |
Dr. Jesse Meeks
Dr. Jesse Meeks has owned and operated his own chiropractic practice for 13 years. He is a graduate of Utah State University and Western States Chiropractic College. Not really convinced about homeschooling in the beginning, he is now glad his family made the commitment to bring their children from a successful experience in public school and begin a whole new adventure. Taking a leap of faith to fulfill a part of his mission, in the fall of 2006 Jesse, along with his wife, Ann opened Legacy Leadership Academy, a private classical liberal arts scholar school. He serves as the primary mentor for an amazing group of youth which continue to amaze and challenge him every day. When Jesse is not studying, studying or studying, he enjoys reading to his children, skiing, serving in his church and sleeping. He is married to Ann Meeks and they have 4 wonderful children. |

Teaching Self Government If we are constantly battling our children at home, how can we create an environment to build leaders? The most inspiring of all lessons taught in the home is that of a good parent/child relationship. This is the fundamental training for leaders. There are no tricks to achieving children that govern themselves, while happily and willingly obeying the counsel of their parents. A working family government and atmosphere of acceptance and love turns the heart of a child to his/her parents. Don’t just parent your children; teach them the skills they need to govern themselves. |

I'm Hungry Mom,
This course is for the discerning parent who realizes the critical role of good health (and energy!) for our next generation of statesmen. Declining American health is but one of many manifestations of our troubled culture. To be powerful, our children need the right advantage at the kitchen table.
With hallmark enthusiasm, Kim gives an intimate look into her journey in raising the bar of health in her home. Come walk with her as she shares the 4 principles she lives by; the habits that make it easier; and a few frugal & nourishing skills that shrink the grocery budget while increasing health in the home. In addition she will simulate a typical mini health class she regularly teaches her children – another key to their successful conversion.
TJed for the fridge! Samples included! (Yep, the men can come too!) |

A Woman Can Be Anything Except...
The feminist movement dumped confusion, both personally and societally, on the woman's role. Since the suffragette movement, and maybe since the beginning of time, woman have struggled to define their role. The three women presenting this class represent 2 generations of women and their search for the answer that allows them the freedom to be themselves, and still fulfill their womanly role. In a reader's theatre style they will be sharing their thoughts and ideas as well as using the words of one of the mentors of C.S. Lewis.

Core and Love of Learning Phases – Tried and True Basics
Do you have young children? Are you new to homeschooling? This class will give you ideas on how you can create an atmosphere in your home that will help your young ones build good character and develop a love for learning that will stay with them, strengthen them, and guide them throughout their lives. |
Candice Winters “The proof is in the pudding” or something like that. Although Candice does not take total credit for the wonderful children coming out of the Winters home, no one would question her influence in the lives of her seven children. Ages 16 to 2, each is receiving the attention and dedication only an Angelic Mother can provide. Candice brings an inspiring yet realistic view of home schooling children through each of the learning phases identified in the TJED model whenever she is asked to speak. “How do you do it?” is a common question she is asked. And while each family must implement true principles in ways that work for their family, Candice is always happy to share her thoughts and experiences of how the Winters family ‘does it’. Although she sees herself as a ‘common garden-variety mother’, others see her as a model to be emulated and a friend to be cherished. Candice embraces motherhood and welcomes any opportunity to encourage others to ‘come home’ and return to traditional family relationships and lifestyles. She has been married to her husband, Jerry, for nearly 18 years. After their first five children were born (all boys), Candice and Jerry were pleased to welcome their last two children (both girls) into their Family. Candice is an accomplished pianist and has passed that love on to her children. Candice lives in Lake Point, Utah.

Husband and Wife:
Division of labor is essential in some areas of family life but catastrophic in others. Fathers and Mothers must be united in establishing their family’s culture. This does not mean they fulfill their unique roles in the same way. On the contrary, Mothers and Fathers will approach the same situation differently and must recognize and appreciate the other’s efforts. Learn how one couple tackles the challenge of raising seven children in a united, concerted, yet imperfect manner. |
Jerry Winters
Jerry Winters is Candice’s husband. At least that’s how he is known in the small circle of home school families they know. Jerry is known (by a few people) around the world for his books and training in customizing CAD software. He enjoys attending activities his wife and children are involved in, which he can do because he is President of VB CAD, Inc. He is also the CIO, CFO, CEO, Chairman of the Board, and the Sanitary Engineer (he takes out the garbage). But the title he loves best is Husband. The title of Dad takes a very close second place, though.
Jerry earned his Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do with his oldest three sons six years ago. And after a six year break he is (painfully) enjoying the process of getting back into shape as the Winters Children have re-entered the martial arts arena. Jerry recently wrote, orchestrated, and directed a musical produced by the Stansbury Park Utah Stake and rejoiced in seeing most of his children (6 out of 7) perform in it. |
